Ch1.1 Software You Need

In this class, you will need some software to get all the projects done. Some of them are free, some are free to TXST students, and some are not free. As below:

  • TextEdit (for PC, use Notepad)
  • Text Wrangler (for PC, use Notepad ++)
  • Bluehost (online service. we will all purchase this hosting service)
  • Fetch (free to TXST students. For PC, use Filezilla)
  • Photoshop (not free)
  • iMovie (Mac only)

Welcome to Web Design & Publishing + Online Media Design, 2014 Summer II classes! You are now on the course website for the class, http://webpub.jacieyang.com/. Take some time and familiarize yourself with this website. And first of all, memorize the web address!!

In the navigation, you will see Home, Tutorials, Schedule, Syllabus, Contact, About, and Assignments.

  1. Home- Shows you the home page of this website and latest announcement from the instructor.
  2. Tutorials- Shows you various text+screenshots or video tutorials.
  3. Schedule- this is the page you will visit the MOST often because it has the schedule of the term. Under each day, you will see assigned videos, assigned readings, and assignments. Follow the schedule closely as things move REALLY REALLY fast!!
  4. Contact- contact info of both the instructor and the TA.
  5. About- about this class
  6. Assignments- lists out all assignments and an assignment requirement sheet for each assignment.

From now on, I will send out an email reminder each day, reminding what you should do for the day.

Your first task is to familiarize yourself with course website as well as what is listed under Schedule –>7/7.

New York Times CMS

CMS = Content Management System. These days, modern websites use CMS as their publishing/managing platform for authors and editors to create and manage content easily. Common used CMS includes Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress (even though some would argue WordPress is a blog system rather than CMS.)

Jordan Brown in Taiwanese Magazine

Jordan Brown, a graduate student at School of Journalism & Mass Communication, is in a Taiwanese magazine- Cheers Magazine. The story is about how wearable technologies like Google Glass is bringing us to a new digital era, and how it may cause privacy issues. Jordan is wearing a Google Glass purchased by the School and the photo was taken by a former graduate student, Jacob Ehrnstein. Both students participated in Dr. Cindy Royal’s  sxtxstate.com project, assisted by SJMC faculty Dr. Jacie Yang, Jon Zmikly, and Dale Blasingame.

WordPress Installation

Here are the steps for WordPress Installation

  1. WordPress.org (download the package. unzip.)
  2. Upload WordPress package. (use Fetch)
  3. Create a subdomain. point to the project folder.
  4. Create a Database
    1. Create a database (database Name)
    2. Create a User (user name)
    3. Add the user to the database (password)
  5. Install WordPress (go to the url in the browser).
  6. Sub.website.com
